Why Visakhapatnam deserves more than a quick beach holiday?

I’ll admit it, when I first planned my trip to Visakhapatnam, I thought it would be all about the beaches. After spending a morning at RK Beach, I might eat some food, watch the sunset from Rushikonda Beach, and move on. It seemed like the ideal two-day getaway to the coast.

However, I realised I had underestimated Vizag somewhere between climbing hilltop vantage points, exploring a retired submarine, exploring ancient Buddhist ruins, and realising how much the city loves its food. It’s a city that won’t let its coastline define it.

Here’s why I think it deserves far more than a quick beach holiday.

The beaches in Visakhapatnam are only the beginning

Let’s get one thing out of the way. Yes, the beaches are beautiful. Walkers, cyclists, families, and food vendors create a vibrant environment at RK Beach from sunrise to late evening that is as much about the city as it is about the sea.

For a quieter stretch of sand, Yarada Beach feels wonderfully peaceful. Rushikonda Beach is where you’ll find people trying water sports or spending an entire afternoon by the Bay of Bengal. However, after a day or two, I realised the beaches weren’t the main attraction. They were simply introducing me to everything else.

Few cities let you go from the sea to the hills so easily

One of my favourite things about Vizag was how quickly the scenery changed. It only took a few minutes to leave the beach behind and drive up to Kailasagiri, where sweeping views of the coastline stretched for kilometres. Standing there, it almost felt like I was looking at two completely different destinations merged into one. The sea shimmered on one side, and green hills rolled away on the other. It’s not a view you expect from a coastal city. And it’s one I could happily admire again.

Visakhapatnam’s history is surprisingly diverse

I did not know that Visakhapatnam had so many stories to tell until I started exploring. You can explore a real submarine that was once part of the Indian Navy at the INS Kurusura Submarine Museum, which provides an intriguing look into marine life. The TU 142 Aircraft Museum honours India’s naval aviation heritage and is just a short drive away.

The Thotlakonda Buddhist Complex is situated atop a hill with a view of the Bay of Bengal. It serves as a reminder to tourists that this coastline was once a major hub for Buddhist education and maritime commerce, dating back more than 2,000 years.

All of a sudden, Vizag was more than just a beach destination. It had centuries of history layered beneath the modern city.

The food in Visakhapatnam is worth travelling for

I expected fresh seafood, but I didn’t expect to enjoy almost every meal. Restaurants served spicy Andhra-style curry, fries, and vegetables that tasted wonderfully fresh. However, the city isn’t only for seafood lovers.

Traditional Andhra meals, with rice, pappu, rasam, tangy pickles, and flavourful vegetable curries, became some of my favourite lunches. Roadside vendors offered hot dosas, crispy snacks, and regional sweets in the evenings, making it simple to put dieting out of your mind.

A city with good food always encourages you to stay longer.

It takes a great base for exploring the region

Another reason I wouldn’t rush through Visakhapatnam is its location. By choosing to stay in hotels in Visakhapatnam, travellers can arrange day trips from the city to the breathtaking Borra Caves, where massive limestone formations have been sculpted over millions of years. They can also make Visakhapatnam a base for visiting Araku Valley, which is well-known for its coffee plantations and picturesque train ride.

Nearer to the city, Dolphin’s Nose Lighthouse, Tenneti Park, and Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary provide entirely different experiences without requiring lengthy travel. The more I looked around, the longer my itinerary stretched.

The sunsets in Visakhapatnam never felt the same twice

I managed to return to the sea every evening. It was the bustling promenade at RK Beach at times. On other evenings, it was the serene shoreline of Yarada Beach or the quieter cliffs close to Tenneti Park. Every location offered a unique view of the Bay of Bengal. Some sunsets were dramatic, and others were wonderfully calm, but every one of them convinced me to stay just a little longer before heading back.

Final thoughts

Visakhapatnam offers everything you could want for a beach vacation, but if you just stop there, you’ll miss a lot of what makes the city unique. Every visit is made more intriguing by its hilltop vistas, intriguing museums, rich Andhra cuisine, ancient Buddhist legacy, picturesque drives, and access points to locations like Araku Valley and Borra Caves.

Come for the beaches if you must. However, stay long enough to discover the hills, the history, the food, and the quieter corners of the city. That’s when Visakhapatnam truly begins to leave an impression.
